Top 5 Hybrid Electric Vehicles of 2020

If you are not ready to jump in the deep end with an all-electric vehicle (EV), but still want to test the waters with a hybrid…consider a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Hybrids utilize an internal combustion engine and a battery-powered electric motor–less harmful to the environment than traditional cars. There are plenty of new hybrids available from automakers ranging from Ford to Porsche, and Consensus is here to walk you through some of the year’s best options.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Mid-Size Sedan

Hyundai notes that “efficiency gets bold’ with its Sonata Hybrid–and the automaker isn’t exaggerating. 

  • The Sonata Hybrid sedan comes with an impressive estimated 52 miles per gallon (MPG) for combined electric and gas city/highway driving and features a strikingly sleek design. 
  • The vehicle comes in three variations: Blue, SEL, and Limited. The standard model is called Blue, which starts at $27,750 and comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen display and Hyundai’s Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA). 
  • The two upgraded models feature wireless device charging, BOSE audio, Hyundai Digital Key (allowing the driver to unlock the vehicle with their phone), and a solar roof in the top-tier Limited model which starts at $35,300. 
  • The vehicle’s bold, aerodynamic exterior means it “slips through the air,” according to Hyundai
  • Available colors include Hampton Gray and Oxford Blue.

Ford Fusion Hybrid Mid-Size Car

All-American automaker Ford has a footing in the hybrid competition with its Ford Fusion list of hybrid mid-size sedans. 

  • The Fusion Hybrid sports 43/41 combined city/highway MPG and comes in three models ranging from $28,000 for the Standard Hybrid SE to $34,595 for the upgraded Hybrid Titanium. 
  • All of the models come with Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide which provides users with customizable visual displays that help them maximize the efficiency of their driving. 
  • Other standard vehicle features include a rearview camera and lane-keeping system. 
  • Color options include White Platinum and Rapid Red.

Toyota Camry Hybrid Mid-Size Sedan

With a combined MPG of 52, the Toyota Camry Hybrid will leave you hitting the road more and filling up less.

  • This classic yet refined iteration of one of Toyota’s flagship vehicles is offered in three models including a standard LE, which starts at $28,430, the SE ($30,130), and XLE for $32,730. 
  • The vehicle’s exterior is fitted with “a pleasing blend of sweeping curves and chiseled surfaces,” and a cozy interior that features several tech specs Camry’s energy monitor. 
  • This allows guests to track their vehicles’ efficiency. Deluxe options include Toyota’s Bird’s Eye View Camera and Wifi Connect which “supports up to five devices.” 
  • You can choose from colors like Brownstone and Galactic Aqua Mica.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Minivan

As Chrysler’s website proudly states, the new Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is “America’s only hybrid minivan,” and “the most fuel-efficient seven-passenger hybrid vehicle.” 

  • The Pacifica Hybrid flexes an extremely impressive estimated 80 MPG for combined electric and gas-powered driving and is offered in four variations ranging from $35,045 for the standard Touring version to $53,390 for the Pinnacle AWD model. 
  • Available colors include Velvet Red Pearl and Granite Crystal Metallic. Chrysler says that its Pacifica Hybrid minivan features the most safety features of any other vehicle, with more than 115 standard and available safety options. 
  • It also boasts a ton of tech features such as what is the “largest touchscreen in its class” with a 10.1-inch screen. 
  • The screen even comes with an optional Chrysler FamCAM Interior Camera to help keep an eye on the little ones in the back.

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Mid-Size SUV

If cost is nothing to worry about, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is a luxury sport SUV that boasts some gorgeous tech features inside and out. 

  • These include Porsche’s LED-Matrix Design headlights, a glowing tail light strip that stretches the vehicle’s entire rear, an HD 12.3-inch touchscreen monitor, four-zone automatic climate control and even BOSE surround sound speakers for optimal sound. 
  • Cayenne also features Porsche’s Head-Up display that offers the driver a full-color display projected within their line of sight on the windshield. 
  • According to U.S. News & World Report, the Cayenne E-Hybrid powered by electricity achieves an EPA-estimated 41 MPG for city/highway trips while its gas engine combined with electric gets 21 MPG. 
  • The Cayenne E-Hybrid comes in colors like Moonlight Blue Metallic, Lava Orange, and Carmine Red, and ranges from $81,800 for the standard version and a hefty $163,000 for the upgraded and more powerful Cayenne Turbo SE Hybrid.
