Cadillac Unveils LYRIQ — 118-Year-Old Company’s First All-Electric Vehicle

This evening, Cadillac debuted its first-ever zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) during a public live stream event. The General Motors-owned luxury vehicle brand is shaking up the electric vehicle (EV) industry with LYRIQ, the midsize crossover that is expected to compete directly with Tesla.

LYRIQ is part of GM’s ongoing $20 billion electric vehicle transition that will include 20 new electric vehicles across GM divisions over the next three years. Cadillac says that LYRIQ “marks the beginning of a new chapter for the brand – one that is all-electric and redefines the boundaries and limits of mobility and connectivity.” According to CNBC.

The reveal comes more than two decades after the release of Cadillac’s iconic Escalade SUV in 1998–a success Cadillac hopes to replicate. “Led by LYRIQ, Cadillac will redefine American luxury over the next decade with a new portfolio of transformative EVs,” said Steve Carlisle, Executive Vice President and President of GM North America, in a company press release. According to CNBC, GM executives are confident that with LYRIQ and future electric vehicles like it, the company will be able to compete with Tesla and other electric vehicle manufacturers. Tesla currently offers one midsize SUV, the “ Model X”, and three sedans.

The LYRIQ features advanced technology, including a sleekly curved 33-inch screen on the vehicle’s interior that Cadillac says “spans the entire viewing area of the driver,” along with GM’s groundbreaking new Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance feature. The SUV also features a “distinctive “black crystal” grille in the front which is “part of a dramatic lighting choreography that — along with bold vertical, slim LED signature lighting — greets the owner upon approach,” Cadillac said in a press release. LYRIQ will also be one of the first vehicles to feature GM’s new Ultium battery system which houses 100 kilowatt-hours of energy. The company says that internal testing shows LYRIQ will attain upwards of 300 miles of range on a full charge. LYRIQ is based on GM’s new modular electric vehicle platform which offers flexibility and allows for a wide range of performance options.

Cadillac LYRIQ pairs next-generation battery technology with a bold design statement which introduces a new face, proportion and presence for the brand’s new generation of EVs. Images display show car, not for sale. Some features shown may not be available on actual production model.

LYRIQ’s release comes on the heels of GM’s announcement last week that the company will partner with EVgo to “triple the size of the nation’s largest public fast-charging network by adding more than 2,700 new fast chargers over the next five years.” The move is aimed at shifting toward electric vehicle usage in the country by installing chargers in convenient, highly visible locations. Cadillac’s unveiling of LYRIQ and GM’s partnership with EVgo marks a new beginning for company-wide electrification. “We changed the world before and we’re going to do it again. We are aggressively going after every aspect of the EV ecosystem because we need millions of EVs on the roads to make a meaningful impact toward building a zero-emission world,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra.
