Those interested in advanced energy education beyond a technical certificate or bachelor’s program, look no further than Colorado. The state offers masters level and even doctoral degree programs that focus on complex sustainability and renewable energy issues.
Colorado School of Mines – NREL Advanced Energy Systems (AES) degree
This interdisciplinary graduate program is a partnership between the Colorado School of Mines and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The program will prepare students “to address the full complexity of tomorrow’s infrastructure, economic, and environmental challenges.” Students are exposed to cutting-edge research at NREL, have full access to their facilities and equipment, and collaborate with NREL partner organizations – providing unique opportunities in renewable energy.
Colorado Technical University – Doctor of Management in Environmental and Social Sustainability
Doctorate programs in sustainability are rarer than in other disciplines. This unique program offers students the chance to obtain a terminal degree in the field. The doctor of management with a concentration in Environmental and Social sustainability combines studies in management principles with research on complex environmental problems. As with most doctoral programs, students will complete and defend a dissertation project that demonstrates an understanding of research processes in their chosen area of expertise and outlines future research avenues.
Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) – Master of the Environment with specialization in renewable and sustainable energy
The Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder, is a joint initiative between the school and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Similar to the program at Colorado School of Mines, students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and unique collaboration opportunities through NREL. The program’s mission is “to expedite solutions that transform energy by advancing renewable energy science, engineering, and analysis through research, education, and industry partnerships.” Students will graduate with an interdisciplinary Masters of the Environment (MENV) degree, specializing in Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
University of Denver – MS in Environmental Policy and Management
The Masters of Science in Environmental Policy and Management offers several concentrations, including Energy and Sustainability, Environmental Analytics and Reporting, and Natural Resource Management. The program can be completed entirely online, making it more convenient for students who are already working professionals. Graduates will analyze and evaluate both local and global environmental issues and apply ecological principles when making organizational decisions.
